Hold your horses..

Don't celebrate until the check's in your hand and the spot's runnin'!

I don't know if you've seen Mad Men, but in an episode in Season 3 they illustrate this point brilliantly with the Patio commercial story-line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AgTnQok3RU

I cannot tell you the amount of jobs I have been hired or on-hold for that have fallen through. Just last week I was posing for the cover of The Wall Street Journal weekend edition and after an hour and a half of work the editors called the photographer and pulled the plug on the story...

Yes...what you say is a very tough pill to swallow... Easy to get bitter about it... Tough to go on... But you must.

I ran into an old actor/comedian friend the other night. He recalled auditioning for, getting called back for, and getting booked for the lead role of a sitcom. Rehearsals were scheduled, and he invited his family to come down and watch some of them. Unfortunately, at after the table read, with senior network execs across the table from him, they canned him!

He still had the free tickets for Universal Studios, and took his family. As he ascended one of the rides, he could see down into the studio lot his former castmates comeing out of a soundstage from rehearsals.

He also concluded it wasn't for him. He was still paid, he said the writing was terrible, and ended up landing a regular role on a critically acclaimed show. The sitcom was never picked up.

BTW my acting coach mentioned that actors are often fired from table reads (even after booking the role!) His advice? Be prepared: know your character, your objectives and your lines as if you were ready for the cameras to roll right then and there....
